Situated inside the Viewpoint Ecolodge, on a pretty canal that leads from the town of Nyaung Shwe to Inle lake, The Viewpoint Shan Restaurant is definitely Nyaung Shwes “fanciest” restaurant – well, it’s said to be the only one in town with aircon so you can’t really argue with that can you?!
You can tell from the stylish decor that the Viewpoint is owned by the company behind the swanky Le Planteur restaurant in Yangon, that and the excellent wine list that is!After a couple of days of drinking the local wine, we decided to treat ourselves to a bottle of Prosecco, a bargain at just $29 for the imminently drinkable “Signore Giuseppe” Extra Dry, whilst we looked at the menus and tried to figure out what to eat.
The Viewpoint offers both local Shan cuisine and also a western menu, perfect for both adventurous eaters as well as weary travellers who may well have had their fill of Burmese food by the time they arrive in Nyaung Shwe.
My friend was delighted to spy a Club Sandwich ($9) on the menu, its surprisingly hard to find a decent one at Yangon’s many 5 star hotels, thankfully the Viewpoint version lived up to expectations coming on proper sliced bread (made in-house!) and being generously filled with Chicken, Cheese, Lettuce, Egg and Tomato (although I didn’t see any bacon in there, I must admit)
I decided to try a selection of their Shan Tapas, Inle Baby Shrimp & Spring Onion Tempura ($6) with a tart Tamarind and Coriander dipping sauce, Shan Yoghurt Crackers with Avocado ($4) and a Green Tomato Salad with Peanuts & Lemongrass ($4) any of which would have been perfect as a pre dinner snack with a chilled glass of wine, but combined, made for a lovely light and interesting lunch, filled with different textures and flavours.
