Gringo Cantina, El Retiro, Bogotá, Colombia.

Fans of Mexican food should be sure not to miss out on eating at Gringo Cantina (with 3 locations across Bogotá, and a 4th in Baranquilla on the coast) when visiting Bogotá, it was definitely up there with some of the best Mexican food I have eaten (outside of Mexico).

We started with cocktails (around $8.50 each) the “Sophia” with Mezcal, Campari and Lime for Judi, the “Margarita Del Gringo” a Margarita made with both Reposado Tequila and Mezcal, and served in a glass rimmed with chilli, for Colin, and the “Flor de Oaxaca” with Mezcal, Tequila, Ginger, Hibiscus and Spearmint for me, as well as a 1/2 portion (more than enough!) of their excellent nachos whilst we looked at the rest of the menu.

The menu is one of the larger menus I have seen in a typical Mexican restaurant and offers everything from Tacos, Quesadillas and Enchiladas, to Pozole, Chilaquiles , Tostadas and Sopes.

We decided to share a ” Tostada de Pulpo” ($3.50 usd) a Tostada topped with Octopus, Smoked Aubergine Aioli, Local Potato, Lime and Sweet Jalapeño to start with, and I must say this was without a doubt my favourite part of lunch. I could easily have eaten another 2, and in hindsight I wish I had ordered another of these along with one taco as opposed to just choosing a couple of tacos – oh well, next time!

Taco wise, we tried everything from the “Camaron” Prawns cooked on the plancha with Cheese, Radish, Sweet Jalapeño and Coriander,  “Lengua” 24 hour cooked Beef Tongue with Roasted Radish Salsa, to the “Pastor” Pork Belly with Pineapple & Pico de Gallo, and “Nopales” Tempura Cactus with Cheese, Rice and Salsa.

All the Tacos are priced individually (from $2.50 usd to $3.25 usd) or for 3 (with around a 20% discount as compared to buying them individually) with nothing on the menu coming to more than $9 usd (although the cocktails are so good, everything can start to add up!) making this a fun and affordable Mexican option when in Bogotá.

We visited Gringo Cantina in “El Retiro” on Calle. 80 ##12a29, Bogotá, Colombia
