The Yangon Restaurant, Peoples Park Compound, Yangon.

In terms of fine dining restaurants in Yangon at the moment, I don’t think you can find better than “The Yangon” restaurant, in Peoples Park.

Until recently I hadn’t visited for quite some time, I ate there a couple of times when they opened in 2016 and was pretty unimpressed, but after a few recent lunch and dinner invitations, it was clear to see that their talented young Malaysian chef has had time to settle in and is doing some extremely good work in the kitchen.

Their set lunch menu is an extremely impressive 25,000++ ($16) for 2 courses, or 30,000++ ($20) for 3. I think lunch is the perfect time to visit (partly but not totally because I’m sorely lacking a hot date to take me there for dinner) owing to the floor to ceiling windows that flood the restaurant with natural light, with attractive views over Peoples Park.

I ordered from their vegetarian menu, starting with Wild Mushrooms & Feta on Toast, topped with rocket & shallots, which I followed with a Wild Mushroom & Truffle Risotto (there were other non mushroom veggie options don’t worry!)

Others in our group opted for dishes such as Lobster & Beetroot Carpaccio, and a beautifully cooked Flank Steak accompanied by a creamy mushroom tagliatelle.

I forgot to make a note of what the desserts were – but you can see for yourself how pretty they were!

Dinner time is a somewhat pricier affair, although still far cheaper than the other “fine dining” establishments in town, with 4 courses at 72,000 ks ++ with the option to add an additional main course for 22,000 ks ++

Canapés included Quail Egg Cornets & Asparagus wrapped in Parma Ham…

Appetisers include dishes such as this Foie Gras and Smoked Eel Millefeuille with Almond Crunch  (so good – I was sad it wasn’t larger!) Lobster Tortellini, and a Wagyu Beef Carpaccio with Lotus Root & Truffle…

Whilst main courses included another very good Truffle Risotto with Baby Mushrooms, Asparagus Tips And Pecorino Cheese, Lavender Honey Glazed Magret Duck Breast with Duck Arancini, Baby Carrot, Broccoli & Wasabi Puree, and a Grilled Angus Beef Flank with Pickled Porcini Mushrooms & Layers Of Potato & Truffle.

Corkage is available from 20,000++ per bottle, should you not wish to order from their fairly solid (but punchy) wine list.
