Gekko was one of the first places I visited when I came to Yangon on holiday back in 2014 and it has become a firm favourite of mine, for both cocktails and their delicious Japanese/Asian Fusion menu.
Located in the beautiful Sofaer building, built in 1906 by the Sofaer brothers (Baghdadi born, Rangoon educated Jews – showing just how multicultural Yangon was in the 1900’s) Gekko features the original patterned floor tiles, as well as Lanarkshire steel beams in the ceiling and also has a small selection of vintage photographs of Yangon from the same period which are well worth a quick look.
With great aircon, comfy sofas and stable wifi, Gekko is a great place to escape the heat of Yangon afternoons for a bento box lunch; their daily happy hour from 5-7pm is also one of Yangons best, especially in the run up to their Friday night live music (every Friday night from 7-9pm) and it’s worth keeping an eye on their Facebook page for other promotions, including their occasional DJ nights.
