Tal Y Cafn, Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

Colwyn Bay falls firmly into the list of town’s that desperately need a restaurant like Sticky Walnut, and we were at an absolute loss as to where to go for lunch with my grandparents when we drove up to see them, until a fabulous recommendation was made, via Twitter,  for the newly reopened Tal Y Cafn.

Executive Chef Richard Williams, who previously worked with Welsh Michelin Starred Chef Bryn Williams, sources all of their ingredients locally, within a 30 mile radius of the former coaching inn, in an effort to highlight all the wonderful local, seasonal ingredients the region has to offer and after a delicious lunch I’d say he’s more than achieved his mission.

I started with “Madarch Gwyllt ar Dost, Wy Wedi’i Botsio” ($4.55) or Wild Mushrooms on Toast for those of us that dont speak Welsh! which came served with a perfectly  cooked soft boiled egg and parsnip crisps on top. Such a simple dish but one that really highlighted the local ingredients to their fullest.

The rest of our group chose the “Cawl y Dydd Gyda Bara Cresting Cynnes” ($4.55) Soup of the Day (which I think was carrot) with Crusty Bread and the “Coctel Corgimwych Clasurol, Tost Melba” ($5.55) a rather fine looking Classic Prawn Cocktail using lovey plump local prawns.

Most of our group chose the “Penfras Cytew Cwrw, Sglodio a Dorrwyd a Llaw, Pys Mal” ($9.95) thats Beer Battered Cod with Hand Cut Chips & Mushy Peas, for mains with my Grandma deciding to go for the “Tagliatelle o’r Mor, Pysgodyn y Dydd” (9.95) which is Seafood Tagliatelle with Fish of the Day, whilst I had a Local Cheese Plate with Bara Brith (a type of fruit bread)

All in all, we had a very good lunch indeed – worlds apart from other pubs and restaurants in the area thats for sure! If you are in the area, whether visiting Snowdonia National Park or Surf Snowdonia, or you happen to be passing through, I would certainly recommend making the detour to enjoy a meal at Tal Y Cafn!
