Soul food 555 @ The Commons, Thonglor, Bangkok

During the almost two years that I lived in Bangkok, Soul Food Mahanakorn was one of the restaurants that I not only enjoyed the most, but visited the most frequently and when I learned that they had opened a second, smaller restaurant “Soulfood 555” at the newly opened “The Commons” in Thonglor, I was excited to visit.

The Commons is Bangkok’s newest “Community Mall” and is home to restaurants such as Roast, Peppina and Maison Jean Philippe as well as Soulfood 555, with most of those restaurants being found in the ground floor “Market Place” a communal dining area where you can enjoy meals from any outlet, as well as a great selection of craft beers and wines from numerous bars and drink stalls.

The menu at 555 is far smaller than at the original Thonglor Soulfood, in imitation of a Thai food stall almost, whilst I could have happily have eaten their lunchtime special ofΒ Khanom Jeen Nam Ya (180 THB with a Lime Soda) I only had eyes for the Khao Soi Cowboy (250 THB)

Khao Soi Cowboy?!Β Yes, you heard me correctly the first time! Khao Soi is a Burmese influenced Northern Thai curry made with chicken cooked in a coconut milk curry with ground chilis which is served with egg noodles, pickled mustard greens, shallots and lime. The original Soulfood Mahanakorn serves a fantastic beef version of this, but at 555 they are not content with selling Β the traditional Khao Soi, no, the clever chaps at 555 have morphed this delicious curry into a burger made with pulled pork that has been slow cooked in the coconut milk and spices and is then topped with crunchy fried egg noodles, pickled greens and shallots with a side of pickled watermelon. I could go on and on about how great this was but I would just recommend a visit to The Commons yourself so you can fully understand just how good it is!
