Union Bar and Grill was one of the first places I ever visited in Yangon, back when I came here on holiday in 2104 and I can happily report it has gone from strength to strength since then.
Recently renovated, the bar/restaurant is located in the beautiful, colonial style Red Cross building on The Strand and benefits from having lots of windows, allowing for natural light to stream in, as well as lovely high ceilings that add to the feeling of space and light during day time yet somehow enhance its cosiness at night.
The menu is supposed to be a “Union” of East & West and includes a mix of local Burmese dishes like Northern Burmese Chicken, Pineapple & Peanut Curry, Za’taar Manoushe with Hummus and Babaganoush, Burgers, Grills, think Mulwarra Sirloin with Shan potatoes, slow cooked tomatoes and rocket salad, Smokehouse favourites like Slow Cooked Pork Ribs and Pizzas from a traditional wood burning oven that are even available for home delivery, especially handy as I live just a few blocks away!
I noted the strong gin collection in my earlier 2014 post and sure enough, gin continues to be a main stay of the drinks menu with a wonderful selection of “Botanical” Gin & Tonics whereby each gin is garnished with anything from vanilla to dill, celery, cardamom and dehydrated fruits.
Whilst Yangon is on the whole far more expensive than Siem Reap, there are still bargains to be had such as their Happy Hour (5pm-7pm daily) with 50% off G&Ts (bringing the price down to a ridiculous $2.50 for the Beefeater version) as well as Moscow Mules from House Wines by the glass, Heineken & Regal 7 beers as well as a selection of delicious cocktails like the Lemongrass & Lychee Smash.
As with Siem Reap, Facebook is very much the most popular way to promote restaurants and bars so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on their Facebook page for upcoming promotions
