Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King, Tanjong Pagar, Singapore

Trying to decide where to eat when I visit Singapore is always a nightmare as there is just SO much to choose from, I never know where to start. As I was visiting on a Monday, my friends were keen to meet straight after work so they didn’t have a crazy late night and so we settled on dinner at Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King in Tanjong Pagar as we wanted to enjoy drinks at the Tippling Club afterwards.

Founded by Keisuke Takeda, somewhat of a celebrity chef in Japan it would seem, Ramen Keisuke has been winning acclaim since it opened back in 2012 and the 20 seater restaurant was absolutely buzzing when we arrived at 6:30pm meaning that we had to queue outside whilst we decided what to order. Thankfully the queue moved quickly and our group of 8 was soon seated, split onto 2 tables as the restaurant really is rather small and compact to say the least!

You are given an order form to check off everything from how soft you want your noodles to how oily the broth should be (I opted just for “normal” as they say this is the most traditional way to eat their Ramen) with a choice of 3 different styles of Ramen; Tonkotsu Ramen ($10.80++-$14.80++) Black Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen ($11.80++-$15.80++) and Red Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen ($11.80++-$15.80++) all of which are available plain or with additional items such as seaweed, Ajitsuke Tamago (candied soft boiled egg) or all of the above which is of course what I decided to add to my Black Spicy Ramen!

Service is extremely quick and efficient and bowl after bowl of steaming hot ramen arrived at our table in no time at all, along with a small bowl of toasted sesame seeds that you are instructed to grind and add to the ramen before eating, a bowl of boiled eggs and some seriously addictive crunchy pickled beansprouts.

I thought the Ramen was really very good indeed, the noodles were nice and firm to the bite (I had checked the “normal” box for how I wanted the noodles cooking) and the broth had a wonderfully rich, porcine flavour from where all the pork fat had melted into the soup during the cooking process, absolutely delicious! The egg was also cooked to perfection, revealing a lovely gooey soft yolk when I cut into it, making the broth even richer in the process. I would definitely go back again but I think I would try the “Red Spicy” Ramen this time as I didn’t find the black pepper seasoning very spicy at all.

Ramen Keisuke is a great spot for a quick bite to eat in Tanjong pagar and in true Japanese style, I can highly recommend it if you are looking for a good spot to “line your stomach” before a big night out! We paid around $20 pp including taxes and a drink
