Jewel Cafe & Bar, 129 Rangoon Road, Singapore

Another little neighbourhood gem that I have neglected to mention so far is Jewel Café and Bar which is located right next door to Liberty Coffee on Rangoon Road, not far from Farrer Park MRT. An all day casual dining concept with an emphasis on great coffee (owner Adrian Khong trained as a coffee roaster and barista in the US no less) Jewel is also one of the few brunch options in and around Little India. Not only do Jewel only use single origin coffee beans, they also have their own roastery at the back of the café as well, hardly surprising that the coffee they serve is very good indeed then is it?! It was the lure of good coffee and brunch that saw me head there on a recent day off in order to enjoy a flat white & eggs Florentine from their breakfast menu. I far prefer eggs Florentine to eggs Benedict – there is something about the combination of spinach and hollandaise that is just perfect and they serve a pretty good version (even if one of the eggs had been a little overcooked.) I chose not to follow my coffee with a cocktail (although I loved the sound of the “Mexican Asylum” Mezcal, vodka and St Germain with cranberry, lime and bitters for $15) but this would be a fun spot to head to for cocktails and bar snacks in the evening. The rest of the menu has everything from Scotch eggs, salt and pepper squid and truffle fries (on the aforementioned snacks menu) to Southern fried chicken and Irish stew as well as burgers, sandwiches and pasta dishes too so there is plenty for you to wash down with a cocktail or glass of wine ($12.) With most brunch dishes costing under $15 this is a great little spot to kick back and relax without breaking the bank and a welcome addition to the area!
